The nominations should be in writing and duly seconded after obtaining the consent of the nominees. Youth Advisory Committee - Applications needed

Youth Advisory Committee - Applicants Needed! Recruitment for the next Upcounty Youth Advisory Committee is underway; deadline is Friday, October 21 Eligible applicants:

  • Are between ages of 13 and 20.
  • Live in or attend school in Montgomery County.
  • May attend public or independent schools.

What do YAC members do?

YAC members meet to discuss teen issues and solutions. YAC members will represent their peers in one of the five regional districts: Bethesda/Chevy Chase, Silver Spring, East County, Mid-County and Upper County. Most meetings will occur in members' respective Regional Service Centers. They will plan and perform service projects in the community and assist in planning regional and countywide teen events such as the TeenLEAD Forum. Members provide valuable insight and feedback to decision makers (e.g. the County Executive, County Council and Department of Recreation) and design marketing materials for teen events.

How often and where will YAC meet?

YAC meetings will occur at the Regional Service Center on a monthly basis. Service projects, special events and countywide meetings will take place during the term at various locations throughout the county.

Kalyani Pillai - Carnatic vocal concert at SV Lotus Temple

On October 5th 2011, Mahanavami day, Kalyani Pillai performed a Carnatic vocal concert at the Sri Venkateswara Lotus Temple at Braddock, Virginia. This one hour long mini concert was one of a series of concerts under the Sharad Navarathri Concert series at the S.V. Lotus Temple. The program was webcasted live by ekutcheri.com. Kalyani was accompanied on the violin by Ranjani Parthasarathy and Kamlkiran Vinjamuri on the mridangam. Kalyani started the concert with the varnam "mathey malayathvaja" in Kamas ragam by Harikeshanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar. After rendering Papanasam Sivan's "Gajavadhana" in Sri Ranjani ragam, her main kritis included Syama Sastri's "Palinchu Kamakshi" in Madhyamavathi and Swathi Thirunal's "Pankaja Lochana" in Kalyani.

Kalyani's past concert experiences include participation in the "Sustaining Sampradaya" concert program for the last four years by children of Indian descent living in North America. In September 2011, Kalyani also participated in the Carnatic Music Idol USA contest organized by Jaya TV, Nadam of India and Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana Committee held at New Jersey, which was judged by the leading vidwans Neyveli Santhanagopalan, S. Sowmya and K.N. Shashikiran. Recently, based on audio recording of songs, she was also selected as one of the eighty four contestants from Thiruvananthapuram region for the Munch Star Singer Season 3 from a total about thousand applicants; but decided not to pursue any further this year due to school commitments and short notice about the next level of audition

Kalyani is also very much interested in South Indian classical dances. She is learning Bharatanatyam from Dr. Janaki Rangarajan of Alexandra, VA and Kuchipudi from Anuradha Nehru of Maryland. She had also learned Mohiniyattam from Sunanda Nair of Houston, TX. Kalyani was one of the ten finalists selected to perform in front of leading Bharathanatyam teachers and performers as part of the 2011 Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana. Over the last four years, she had won several awards and recognition from local and national cultural and non-profit organizations.

FOKANA Spelling Bee - Washington region winners

Mahita Vijily won the first prize in FOKANA Washington region Spelling bee competition held in Potomac Community center, MD on September 18th. Mahita is the daughter of Dr. Vijily Bahuleyan and Dr Soya. Kevin Bobby won the second prize. Kevin's parents are Bobby Augustine and Sany Joseph who work for DC Government. Namita Thomas won the 3rd prize. Namita is the daughter of Rex Thomas and Mini. All three winners will participate in FOKANA national spelling competition on October 29th at New York.

Obituary

With profound grief and sadness, we announce the demise Smt. Dr. Vimala Nair (wife of late Sri. Col. Keshavan Unni Nair). She was the mother of Dr. Parvathy Mohan and mother-in-law of Dr. Madan Mohan (Silver Spring, MD), both very active members of the community. Dr. Vimala Nair passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 5 am in the morning at her residence in Trissur, Kerala.
